John's RANTS and RAVES
Everyone has their favorite things they absolutely
love and some they don't love... at all. Here are my top things
RANTS:
#1. Norton / Symantec Anti-Virus, Norton / Symantic Internet Security
- This is the worst program I have ever encountered,
and I've seen some really bad ones
- It is bloated, slows down your PC, and does not
catch viruses
- I can't believe they continue to sell this
junk
#2. Hewlett-Packard All-In-One Printers
- HP makes fantastic hardware, but the software that
comes with it is bloated...
- It takes too long to install
- It installs a lot of junk and trial software you
probably don't want or need
- It installs an updater that causes problems for
your PC
#3: Microsoft Licensing for Thin Client Computing
- The concept is fantastic,
run several desktops from one large serve
- Thin client SHOULD deliver a full desktop at a reduced
per-seat cost
- However, Microsoft licensing
policy disallows mixing pre-installed from the factory with direct-purchased
licenses
- Microsoft's minimum 5 seat policy makes the
concept cost-prohibitive for small business
RAVES:
#1. Hewlett-Packard PC's and Laptops, www.hp.com
- HP makes business computers
that are top-notch in performance and quality
- The consumer-oriented offerings are very good...
one minor annoyance is the amount of trial software, but they are easily
uninstalled.
- The business-oriented computers are the best...
you can order off-the-shelf or custom build-to-order
#2: Google Mail, www.google.com
- Allows you to make it the
central repository for all you e-mail accounts in one place
- Allows you to send from google with your own personal
address
- Has a great spam filter to weed out junk
- Has a lot of storage space - 250MB!
- Outlook or Outlook Express only have ~2MB limit
- Thunderbird only has ~3MB limit
- What more can you ask for?
#3: Open Office, www.openoffice.org
- Want to get out from under the high-cost Microsoft
Office upgrade cycle?
- Open Office mimics every function of Microsoft Office,
yet it's free!
- You will have to learn a couple new menus, but most
menus are the same, so little re-training needed
